The class includes participants from the area's business, government, and nonprofit sectors.

Northeast Ohio outstripped national growth in several of the job sector's sub-categories, most notably scientific research and development.

Employment in research and development stood at 4,000-plus in a 16-county region of Northeast Ohio last year. That's more than 80 percent higher than 1993, according to research Team NEO did on data from Moody's Economy.com.

A WindCube In Northern Ohio

A cube;

Green Energy Technologies unveiled a new type of wind turbine Monday that will generate power for business park resident Crown Battery.

This is the first commercial installation of the WindCube in the country. The concept was introduced to the public in May at the Windpower 2009 Conference and Exhibition in Chicago.

COSE's "I Buy NEO" program is a local version of a grassroots movement in cities and small towns across America that has been gaining momentum for more than a decade. Merchants and consumers from Maui to Rockland, Maine, have banded together to promote local merchants and preserve what makes their communities unique.

"Numerous studies have demonstrated that dollars spent at independent, locally owned businesses generate more than three times as much direct return to the local economy as dollars spent at chains or other absentee-owned businesses," said Jeff Milchen, co-founder of the American Independent Business Alliance in Bozeman, Mont., a national hub for such efforts around the country.

Big Surprise; Cleveland Has Lost Some Of It's Residents

The U.S. Census Bureau will announce today that Cleveland lost nearly 10 percent of its population this decade, the fastest rate of decline of any major American city except New Orleans, which weathered a hurricane and is bouncing back.

Northeast Ohio Pawnshops Are Busy

Happening now in Youngstown;

Ohio's unemployment rate was 10.4 percent in May. Trumbull County's rate was 14.3 percent, and in Warren, the rate reached 15.3 percent. Mahoning County was not far behind with a 12.2 percent unemployment rate, which includes a Youngstown unemployment rate of 13.7 percent.

Free 8 Week Tutoring Program Being Offered

Right now, students all across America are preparing for their summer vacations. Unfortunately their minds might be going on an extended vacation. Extensive studies by Johns Hopkins University have shown that kids can lose up to two months or more of math and reading skills each summer. Those same studies have shown that two-thirds of the 9th grade achievement gap between low and high income students is due to a lack of adequate summer learning activities. Many teachers have to spend at least 4-6 weeks of each school year re-teaching the previous years material.

All of this frustration led to the creation of the Knowledge College Community Corporation (KCCC). A non-profit organization whose mission is to close the achievement gap that exists in urban public schools, and to prepare up and coming college grads for a career in the public school system.

The non-profit was formed in the fall of 2008, and will provide a FREE 8-week tutoring program at the MLK Civic Center in East Cleveland starting June 16th. In preparation for their careers, several college students and recent grads will be conducting math and
reading lessons for kids in grades K through 8. In addition, several local Shaw High School football players will also be volunteering their time to help assist Knowledge College tutors each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm ending August 6th.
