As I continue to learn more and more about the internet space, and how it is evolving daily, I get to network with some great innovators and visionaries.I had an opportunity last week to interact with The Good Blogs founder, Vernon Lun. This guy is smart, with a CAPITAL S...........from Toronto
The Good Blog’s Home page states their mission, succinctly.
Our goal is to help
you:
Promote your blog, discover new blogs and connect with other bloggers.
My interview with Vernon.
Question:. How long have you been involved in the internet space, and when did you get
interested in it?
Vernon: I've been in the Internet space since the mid 90's. Back then, I was a founding
member of a startup in Push technology. After that, there were several gigs
that touched on various technologies including VOIP, Click to Chat customer
service, customer relationship management,CRM,to online employee incentives, semantic technology etc.
Question: . So...where did you get the idea for The Good Blogs?
TheGoodBlogs was a concept that was born because my partner Tony and I wanted
to do something we knew and cared about. I started blogging seriously at the
end of 2005 and noticed there were many terrific bloggers that had created
content and weren't getting any exposure. We had been working on a project with
an ad server and we thought creating a Google type service for promoting blogs
instead of ads was a great thing for the blogging community. So we created TheGoodBlogs
as a distributed network that bloggers could use to promote each other and to
find other like-minded people for their readers and for themselves. Using the
widget, we could leverage the entire network and not rely on a single portal or
website to drive traffic and brand.
Question: What sets it apart form others, like Blog Catalog etc.
I think there's a lot of commonality amongst many of the widget these days.
It's hard to do a side-by-side comparison with each one because each one has a
slightly different twist to how and why they are doing. What we care about the
most at TheGoodBlogs is driving value. Having the widget on a blog page is just
the start. We then added other features like promoting and sharing your own
communications and creating and tracking conversations using our special
conversation tag. Recently we added a link to the widget that takes you and
your readers to your profile, a concise view of your communities and the
categories that you belong to. We make sure the content that is promoted is
always fresh and current. Our tag cloud on our website shows what our bloggers
are saying on a daily basis. I think of TheGoodBlogs as a suite of services as
opposed to one technology. What we found that most bloggers don't take an
exclusive view of widgets, they will try and keep several at the same time
because each one brings something different to the table.
Question: How many new members are you signing up a month?
We are averaging around 300 members a month and track over 3000 blogs right
now.
Question: Are you planning on adding any other tools to add more value to your network
as it matures, and if so, can you share one or two?
We're probably going to focus a lot more on giving members control of how they
create and manage their communities. We're also looking to allow bloggers to
promote other things beyond blogs like their favorite books, movies etc. so
it's all managed in one place instead of having to load 4 or 5 different
widgets on their blog.
Take a look at how MY page on The Good Blogs looks. Here
Pretty cool, huh?
